Culinary Art Colleges Near Phoenix, Arizona

The Phoenix metro area is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States, according to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau. With over four million residents, the area is home to an abundance of restaurants, which all require skilled culinary artists. Naturally, the area is also home to a few prestigious culinary arts colleges. These schools all require at least a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalency, and all offer financial aid and scholarships for qualified students.
  1. The Art Institute of Phoenix

    • The Art Institute offers an associate's degree of applied science in baking and pastry arts as well as culinary arts. It also offers a bachelor of arts in culinary management. The associate degree programs consist of seven 11-week courses, with culinary arts courses also offered in the evening. The bachelor's degree is twelve 11-week courses. Students study with seasoned chefs and culinary professionals and also learn the culinary business. For example, according to the Art Institute's course catalog, the capstone project for baking and pastry arts is to present "a complete business plan to open a commercial baking and pastry facility."

    Arizona Culinary Institute

    • Small classes and hands-on training are the hallmarks of the Arizona Culinary Institute. This culinary college offers a program consisting of six months of classes followed by a three-month paid internship. The school also boasts a student-run restaurant, du Jour, which is open to the public. Here, culinary arts students gain valuable experience and learn all aspects of operating in a professional restaurant environment. While the Arizona Culinary Institute offers eight program start dates each year, it does not offer night classes, leaving students available to work evening culinary positions if they choose. The school is also making an effort to be green by donating its used vegetable oil to be modified for biodiesel.

    Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale

    • At the two Scottsdale campuses of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, students can earn a certificate in culinary arts or patisserie and baking; an associate of occupational studies in culinary arts, patisserie and baking or hospitality and restaurant management; or a bachelor of arts in culinary management. The program is 15 months long. Class sizes range from 34 to 60 students, depending on whether the class is a laboratory or a lecture. Each campus has a student-run restaurant, L'Academie and L'Ecole. Externships are an important part of the program, offering students the opportunity to refine their culinary skills in a real-world setting.
