The history of MIT's electrical engineering department dates back over 130 years. The school says nearly 25 percent of its undergraduates enroll in the electrical engineering and computer science program. MIT offers three four-year undergraduate programs in electrical engineering. One tailors to electrical science and engineering, another specializes in computer science and a third mixes both fields. The graduate program awards both master's degrees and doctorates. Master's candidates must complete a thesis for graduation.

The electrical engineering department at Stanford University traces its history to 1893. The university stresses that, upon graduation, students have a basic technical knowledge of electrical engineering, a preparation for future study and a high level of communication and design skills to develop projects. The school offers both master's and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering and allows students to study full-time or part-time. The school also schedules its classes in quarters rather than semesters. Among the on-campus research centers where students study are the Center for Magnetic Nanotechnology, the Center for Reliable Computing and the Center for Space Science and Astrophysics.

Since 1868, the University of California at Berkley has offered a comprehensive curriculum in electrical engineering. The program awards bachelor of science degrees, and talented students also have the option of studying in the honors program, where these students choose a field of study outside their major to explore. The school also offers master's degrees and doctorates as well as a specialized track where students earn both their bachelor's and master's degrees in five years.
