California Colleges for Zoology Training

Colleges with Campuses in Large Cities

• San Francisco State University offers a bachelor of science in biology with a concentration in zoology. Applicants to the College of Science and Engineering, which oversees SFSU's biology department, should have at least three years of high school math and one year of high school chemistry. Students pursuing this degree take classes in ornithology, mammalogy and insect taxonomy, among many others.

  SFSU is located in the heart of San Francisco, two miles south of Golden Gate Park. Also nearby is the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, home to the 1960s counter-culture movement.

Northern California Colleges

• California State University at Stanislaus grants a bachelor's of biological science degree with a concentration in zoology. Students pursuing this path take classes in herpetology, entomology and invertebrate zoology, among others.

  Humboldt State University offers a bachelor of zoology, as well as a minor in that subject. Available minors for zoology majors include botany, biology, marine biology and science education.

Central California Colleges

• The University of California at Santa Barbara offers a bachelor of science in zoology. Majors in this program take a range of classes including genetics, plant biology and chemistry. The College of Letters and Science oversees this major, as part of the Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology department.

  The University of California at Davis grants bachelor degrees in wildlife, fish and conservation biology, with a concentration available in wildlife biology. This course of study covers most of the same subjects as other colleges' zoology degree programs.

Southern California Colleges

• The California State University at Long Beach College of Science and Mathematics grants bachelor's degrees in zoology.

  The University of California at Riverside offers a bachelor's of science in biology with an emphases on zoology and physiology. Animal behavior is another available emphasis, as is veterinary medicine.

  California State Polytechnic University's College of Science offers 19 majors, including zoology. Marine biology and California flora are just two of the many courses students will take as part of this major.
