Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts is most known for its wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in the areas of architecture, design, fine arts and writing. One of its programs is fashion design, a four-year program cultivating skills of creativity, curiosity and innovation while emphasizing fashion practice and imaginative thinking. The curriculum focuses not only on applications such as draping, pattern cutting, sewing, knitting and illustration, but also the humanities and sciences. Lectures, guest speakers, field trips and juried reviews improve students' knowledge in the field. There are merit scholarships available for those who qualify.

Academy of Couture Art offers programs filled with hands-on and student-centered activities. Academy of Couture Art offers four degree programs designed to educate students in the fashion industry. These courses include associate of arts degree in fashion design, associate of arts degree in pattern design, bachelor of arts degree in fashion design and bachelor's of arts degree in fashion design. Associate's degrees last for two to three years, while bachelor's degrees last for at least four years. Bachelor's degrees require more units and are more extensive; associate's degrees are short-course programs students can complete and then continue to bachelor's degrees. Other than subjects related to fashion design, students must take units in the area of liberal arts. The academy provides financial assistance as well.
