Mode Gakuen, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, the trendy fashion district of Japan’s capitol, is perhaps the most unique fashion design college in Japan. In addition to its high academic standards, Mode Gakuen offers students an internship program, something nearly nonexistent in Japanese education. Another unique feature of Mode Gakuen is its “Employment Guarantee System.” The college helps students to find work upon graduation and until they do secure employment, they are allowed to continue studying at the college free of charge.

Tokyo Fukushoku Senmon Gakko offers students two different paths to take in the fashion industry: a fashion design degree or a fashion business degree. The fashion design degree program directs students from idea inspiration to creation and on to sales. The fashion business degree program teaches students how to understand and predict the market trends in order to become a fashion buyer.

Tokyo Designer Gakuin is a diverse school of design. The curriculum addresses the overlapping areas of fashion including design, coordination, makeup, bridal fashion and business. Students learn the foundations of fashion design and then branch out to focus on a major area of expertise such as illustration, pattern-making, sewing, buying or marketing. The Tokyo Designer Gakuin also offers avenues into other areas of the arts including interior design and graphic design. The addition of animation to the curriculum in 1965 made Tokyo Designer Gakuin the first college in Japan to offer studies in animation.
