Texas A&M is a research university and consistently ranks among the best public colleges and universities in the country. Texas State University offers 97 bachelor's, 89 master's and nine doctoral degree programs. Located in San Marcos, it is halfway between Austin and San Antonio. According to the university's, website Detachment 840 won the coveted AFROTC Right of Line award in 1994 and Top Detachment in the Nation in 2000.

Texas Tech is located in Lubbock and is a comprehensive research university. It offers 150 undergraduate degree programs as well as a graduate school and school of law. According to the university's website, UTSA Air Force Detachment 842 was "awarded the Air Force ROTC Right of Line Award, the most prestigious award for AFROTC detachments" in 2009.
