What Texas State Colleges Have an Air Force ROTC?

"Air Force ROTC is a college program offered at over 1,000 colleges and universities across the U.S. that prepares you to become an Air Force Officer," according to the U.S. Air Force ROTC website. Air Force ROTC scholarships are available to qualified students and will cover tuition, books and in some cases include a monthly cash stipend. There are 10 colleges and universities in Texas that have Air Force ROTC programs, officially called detachments. Eight of those detachments are in state schools.

    • Angelo State University, located in San Angelo, Texas, is part of the Texas Tech University system and was founded in 1928. ASU offers nearly 100 majors in 45 undergraduate and 27 graduate degrees. Angelo State University's Air Force ROTC program is Detachment 847.

    Texas A&M University

    • Founded in 1876, Texas A&M University was "Texas' first public institution of high learning," according to its website. Of the 38,000 undergraduate and 9,000 graduate students, 50 percent are women. Texas A&M is a research university and consistently ranks among the best public colleges and universities in the country. The Texas A&M Undergraduate Catalog states the "AFROTC program at Texas A&M University [Detachment 805] is one of the largest AFROTC programs in the United States."

    Texas State University - San Marcos

    • Texas State University offers 97 bachelor's, 89 master's and nine doctoral degree programs. Located in San Marcos, it is halfway between Austin and San Antonio. According to the university's, website Detachment 840 won the coveted AFROTC Right of Line award in 1994 and Top Detachment in the Nation in 2000.

    Texas Tech University

    • Texas Tech is located in Lubbock and is a comprehensive research university. It offers 150 undergraduate degree programs as well as a graduate school and school of law. In Detachment 820, home of the Texas Tech Skyraiders, "you will receive the best training this country's military has to offer, while finishing college with the degree of your choice," according to the Skyraider's page on the Texas Tech Website.

    • Each year more than 37,000 students attend the University of Houston. UH is a leading public research university and awards more than 6,500 degrees annually. Detachment 003 is the home of UH's more than 100 AFROTC students.

    • University of North Texas in Denton is one of the largest universities in Texas, according to its website. The university's 12 colleges and schools offer a total of 97 bachelor's degrees and 149 graduate degrees. Detachment 835 at UNT is one of the premier Air Force ROTC units in the country.

    University of Texas - Austin

    • The University of Texas at Austin is home to more than 50,000 students and Detachment 825 of the Air Force ROTC. It is the largest institution within the University of Texas system. It employs more than 2,900 faculty and 21,000 staff members.

    • University of Texas - San Antonio is located in the nation's seventh largest city. For the last decade it has been the fastest growing public university in Texas. According to the university's website, UTSA Air Force Detachment 842 was "awarded the Air Force ROTC Right of Line Award, the most prestigious award for AFROTC detachments" in 2009.
