SDSU hosts AFROTC Detachment 75. Like other units, Detachment 75 cadets must complete summer training programs if they want to be considered for a commission after graduation. However, assignment to a summer Field Training exercise is not automatic. It has to be earned based on performance in AFROTC activities, academic grades and physical fitness test scores. Detachment 75 offers a Field Training Preparation course for cadets in their second year to help increase their chances at a summer Field Training assignment. Some of the summer programs available to cadets include Glider School, Jump School, Space Orientation and and assignment with the Office of Special Investigation.

Cadets at SJSU's Detachment 45 are known for their Precision Drill Unit. In addition to regular college classes, aerospace studies courses and morning PT, these cadets spend hours of their free time learning to march and move as a team. PDU members perform as members of both the unit Color Guard and Drill Team. At the end of the day they perform Reveille. PDU members are identifiable by the red braid that loops around their left shoulder.
