The University of Virginia received the top ranking in the state from "U.S. News & World Report" in 2007. UVA was ranked No. 19 in the nation among all nursing programs nationwide. The university offers multiple degree programs and a direct entry into the master's degree program for students holding a bachelor's degree in another field. UVA also offers the traditional master's program, and students can pursue a joint master's degree in nursing and business administration. Doctoral degrees also are offered. A number of different specializations also are available, such as acute and specialty care, family nurse practitioner, psychiatric and mental health advanced practice and community and public health leadership, among others.

Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond is the second-highest rated nursing program in the state of Virginia. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the VCU program No. 47 in the nation. Like UVA, VCU offers multiple degree programs. Students can pursue the traditional or an accelerated bachelor's degree. The same is true of the master's program. VCU also offers a doctoral program and a number of post-master's degree certificates. VCU is a leading research institution in the field of nursing and sponsors the Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research.

George Mason University is Virginia's third top-100 nursing program at No. 63 on the "U.S. News & World Report" rankings list. GMU offers multiple degree pathways for both undergraduate and graduate students. At the undergraduate level, both traditional and accelerated programs are available. GMU also offers the second degree option for non-nursing students wanting to enter the field. Master's programs offered include advanced clinical nursing, nursing administration, nursing education and nurse practitioner. A joint master's program is available along with a doctoral program.
