Good Psychology Colleges

Obtaining a degree in psychology can provide opportunities for career advancement. According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Occuptational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011, jobs within the field should grow from 12 to 26 percent between 2008 and 2018, depending on specialty and sub-field. A psychology degree can lead to a career in counseling, therapy, research or private practice. The Social Psychology Network maintains a list of the top undergraduate programs in the country as ranked by the "Princeton Review."
  1. Stanford University

    • Stanford University's psychology program ranked first on the Social Psychology Network list. The department offers five research areas, including affective science, cognitive, developmental, neuroscience and social psychology. Degrees include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, a non-terminal Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy.

    Yale University

    • In second place, the Yale University Department of Psychology offers Ph.D., B.A. and B.S. degree programs and a computer science and psychology combined undergraduate degree. Departmental research focus falls into five areas: behavioral neuroscience, clinical, cognitive, developmental and social/personality.

    University of Pennsylvania

    • The University of Pennsylvania came in third. The university's department is the oldest continuously operating psychology program in the U.S. Research foci fall into two major categories: brain, cognitive and decision science and clinical, positive and social psychology. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees with both clinical and research emphasis.

    University of Michigan Ann Arbor

    • The University of Michigan Ann Arbor's Department of Psychology ranked fourth. The department offers research emphasis in nine areas: biopsychology, clinical, cognition and cognitive neuroscience, developmental, personality and social context, social, education and psychology, social work and psychology, and women's studies and psychology. Degree options include a B.A., B.S. and Ph.D.

    University of Minnesota

    • The University of Minnesota, fifth on the list, operates several research centers and laboratories. Among them are the Brain and Behavioral Processes Laboratory, the Center for Cognitive Sciences, the Center for Interest Measurement Research and the Computational Perception and Action Laboratory. Students can earn a B.A., B.S. or Ph.D.

    University of California Berkeley

    • The University of California Berkeley ranked sixth on the list. The college's psychology department offers degrees in five research areas: behavioral neuroscience; change, plasticity and development; clinical science; cognition, brain and behavior; and social/personality. Students can earn a Ph.D., non-terminal M.A., B.A. or B.S.

    Harvard University

    • Harvard University's psychology department ranked seventh. The department has five research areas for graduates studies: clinical science, developmental, organizational behavior, social and cognition, brain and behavior. Undergraduate psychology majors must choose a track of study, such as the mind, brain and behavior track, the social and cognitive neurosciences track, or the general track. Degree programs include B.A., B.S., a Ph.D. and a post-doctoral program.
