University of California at Berkeley has been offering Army ROTC since the start of the program in 1916 but has been producing Army officers since 1870 when the university was founded. Some famous cadets to grace the halls of Berkeley were Robert McNamara, former Secretary of Defense, and former Army Chief of Staff Frederick Weyand. The university has produced over 17 generals.

The University of Alabama has been producing officers since 1860. Since then the Army ROTC has produced over 7,500 officers, 42 general officers, 6 governors of Alabama and about 25 judges. Some notable distinguished graduates were Charles W. Davis who was awarded the Medal of Honor, John R. Vines, commander of the 18th Airborne Corps, John McKinley, former President of Texaco, and Winston Groom, author of "Forrest Gump."

Pennsylvania State University started producing officers for the military as early as 1855. Penn State was involved in producing cadets during the Civil War, but it was not until 1916 when the first Army ROTC unit was created. In 1962 mandatory military training was discontinued. The first women started in 1972 at Penn State. Currently Pennsylvania State University is one of the largest units east of the Mississippi.

University of Maine began military training in 1869 well before Army ROTC was started in 1916. By 1939 the corps of cadets had grown to over 800 cadets, and the corps at the University of Maine had distinguished itself in the Northeast has having some of the best marksmen. During World War II, more than 1,370 fought in combat and 162 gave up their lives. Major General John Libby, current (2010) Adjutant General of the Maine National Guard, is a notable graduate from the University of Maine.

Texas A&M goes back to 1876 where its first corps of cadets started with a graduating class of 40. Ever since the Spanish American War, the Aggies of Texas A&M have served in every conflict the United States has been involved in. During World War II, Texas A&M produced 7,000 reserve officers. The school has produced seven Medal of Honor recipients and more than 225 generals.
