The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is the top rated school for the study of psychology in the state of Illinois. According to the most recent "U.S. News & World Report" rankings, UIUC ranked No. 7 among all psychology departments nationwide in 2009. The university offers both the undergraduate major and minor in psychology along with graduate degrees in the field as well. The department is separated into various divisions that reflect the research interests of faculty members. These include the divisions of biological psychology, visual cognition and human performance, brain and cognition studies, industrial-organizational psychology, clinical and community research, social and personality studies, cognitive studies, quantitative research and developmental studies. The second highest rated psychology department in the state of Illinois is located at Northwestern University in Evanston. The undergraduate program at Northwestern allows students to either major or minor in psychology. Many students at the undergraduate level have the opportunity to pursue independent studies as part of their degree program. At the graduate level, Northwestern offers the Ph.D. with five possible options for study. Research areas include brain, behavior and cognition studies, clinical psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology and personality psychology. Northwestern offers a lucrative funding program for Ph.D. students. All Ph.D. students are awarded full-funding for their education for five full years.

Also among the best psychology programs in the nation, the University of Chicago's department of psychology was ranked No. 23 by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2009. At the undergraduate level students can pursue specialized courses of study that allow them to focus on one particular aspect of psychology. Double majors are also offered at this level allowing students to focus on two areas concurrently. The university offers the Ph.D. at the graduate level in four different research areas: social psychology, cognition studies, developmental psychology and integrative neuroscience. The University of Chicago also sponsors interdisciplinary research in fields such as early childhood studies, biological/psychological studies and social and cognitive neuroscience.
