China Medical University was the first medical school established by the Chinese Communist Party. Its precursor was founded in Ruijin in 1931, moved to Shanbei in 1940 and the name changed to China Medical University. In 1946 the university reached Xinshan with the Red Army, and was ordered to move to Shenyang in 1948. In 1949 it absorbed the medical school of the Japanese and the Mukden Medical College, which had been founded in 1892. CMU has used English as a medium for instruction in its programs since 1978. Some faculty members studied in Europe or the United States thru exchange programs, and thus speak good English. A bachelors degree takes five years to complete; a masters degree, three years; and a doctorate, three years. CMU has 28 colleges with a total of 20,287 students. It now remains in Shenyang, one of China's 10 largest cities, and is the capital of Liaoning, the industrial center and transportation hub of Northeast China.
