Becoming a medical doctor takes years of hard work and dedication, so choosing the best medical school is of the utmost importance. The U.S. News & World Report has provided a ranked list of the top 10 medical schools in the United States in 2010 for use as a reference guide for future medical students.

    • The top ranked school on the U.S. News & World Report 2010 list of the best medical schools is the University of Washington in Seattle, established in 1861. The nationally accredited University of Washington School of Medicine was formed in 1945. The second-ranked medical school, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been providing formal instruction in medicine since 1879. The third-ranked Portland Health and Science University has been training doctors since 1867, when it was the Willamette University medical department. The fourth medical school, the University of Vermont, located in Burlington, established its College of Medicine in 1822.

    • The University of California at San Francisco and the University of Colorado at Denver tied for the number five spot on the U.S. News & World Report 2010 list of best medical schools. The University of California School of Medicine was established in 1864 as the Toland Medical College. The University of Colorado School Of Medicine was founded in 1883 with just two students. Michigan State University and the University of Pennsylvania are tied for the seventh spot. Michigan State University College of Human Medicine has been preparing doctors to care for patients since 1964. The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, founded in 1765, is the oldest medical school in America.

    Two more good schools

    • The final two schools making the top 10 list of the U.S. News & World Report 2010 list are the University of Massachusetts and the University of Iowa. The number nine school, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, established in 1962, is the only public medical school in Massachusetts. The tenth-ranked University of Iowa was created in 1847 and is the largest state-supported institution in the state.
