The top ranked school on the U.S. News & World Report 2010 list of the best medical schools is the University of Washington in Seattle, established in 1861. The nationally accredited University of Washington School of Medicine was formed in 1945. The second-ranked medical school, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been providing formal instruction in medicine since 1879. The third-ranked Portland Health and Science University has been training doctors since 1867, when it was the Willamette University medical department. The fourth medical school, the University of Vermont, located in Burlington, established its College of Medicine in 1822.
