Top Five Medical Universities

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, there are 132 accredited medical schools in the United States. However, only a select few are considered top-tier schools. Top-tier medical schools gain their standing through a reputation for quality research, teaching and medical care, as well as from organizations, periodicals and independent assessments.
  1. Harvard Medical School

    • Harvard Medical School, founded in 1784, is one of the oldest medical schools in the country. The school is located in Boston and is affiliated with 17 hospitals and research institutes throughout Massachusetts.

      According to U.S. News and World Report, Harvard Medical School is the best research medical school in the country. As of 2010, 13 Nobel laureates are among Harvard Medical School's faculty and alumni.

    University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

    • Founded in 1765, Penn Med was the first medical school in the United States. The school now has 28 clinical departments, three teaching hospitals and more than 15 research centers.

      As of 2010, Penn's School of Medicine was the second-best medical research school, according to U.S. News and World Report's rankings. The school also received the second-highest amount of research funding in 2010.

    Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

    • The School of Medicine was founded in 1876 with a $7 million gift from Johns Hopkins, who decreed that the money should be spent on building a hospital and university that served all members of the public. As of 2010, nearly 500 students attend JHU's School of Medicine, with support from 3,700 faculty.

      JHU's School of Medicine ranked third is U.S. News and World Report's medical school rankings, and first overall for treatment of drug and alcohol abuse, geriatrics, and internal medicine.

    University of Washington School of Medicine

    • The University of Washington School of Medicine is a public school in downtown Seattle. The school provides a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programs in medicine. The UW medical network encompasses three hospitals, two medical air transport systems and numerous clinics throughout a five-state area.

      In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked UW as the best primary care medical school in the country. The school also received top rankings for family and rural medicine.

    University of California--San Francisco School of Medicine

    • The UCSF School of Medicine was founded in 1864. The school joined the University of California system in 1873 and built its first teaching hospital in 1907. The School of Medicine now operates over seven sites in San Francisco and nearby Fresno, California.

      UCSF is the only medical school to appear in the top ten of both research and primary care schools, according to U.S. News and World Report; in 2011, the school was ranked fourth overall for research and fifth for primary care.
