The school contains nearly 50 hospital-based clinical departments as well as 11 academic departments, including cell biology, genetics, health care policy, neurobiology, stem cell and regenerative biology and systems biology. The school grants Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) and dual PhD and MD degrees. In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked Harvard University first among medical research schools and 17th among primary care training schools. The same magazine also ranked Harvard first in pediatrics, first in women's health and second in internal medicine.

In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked the University of Pennsylvania second among medical research schools and seventh among primary care training schools. Johns Hopkins University opened the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1889 and founded the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1893. The name "Johns Hopkins Medicine" now refers to the university's affiliated hospitals and medical centers, its community physicians, care group, health care and health system as well as the School of Medicine. The school offers Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MS) degrees in 16 academic fields, including biological chemistry, cellular and molecular medicine, functional anatomy, history of science, medicine and technology, immunology, and pathobiology. In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked the Johns Hopkins University third among medical research schools. The same magazine also ranked Johns Hopkins first in internal medicine and fourth in pediatrics and women's health.
