The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are funded by the central government of India, with direct oversight from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. (See References 2) These institutes confer four-year B.Tech degrees in more than ten branches of engineering. Admission is extremely competitive based on students' performance in the annual Joint Entrance Examination.

Chennai-based College of Engineering is affiliated with the prestigious Anna University. This college is one of the very oldest engineering institutions in India, and consistently at the top of rankings. B.Tech degrees are offered in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, information and communication engineering, and in computer science.

Each state in India has a campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), which were previously known as the Regional Engineering Colleges. These colleges were established in the late 1950's and early 1960's, with recent additions in the last few years to ensure that each state had one. The NIT curriculum has been updated to match that of the IIT. (See References 3)
