The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are widely considered to be top choice for anyone aspiring to do an M.Tech. In fact, the IITs are the ones who administer the common entrance exam, the GATE which all students must clear in order to be considered for admission. Only the top rankers in GATE get admitted into the IITs. There are up to 50 seats set aside for M.Tech in each IIT. The IITs offering M.Tech include Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Guwahati.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) does not offer B.Tech degrees, but it has a very highly rated M.Tech program. The aspiring students usually have to score higher than 99 percentile in the GATE exam in order to get admission, or they have to score well in the entrance exam administered by IISc itself.

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) is a private college with campuses in Pilani and in Goa. In BITS, the post graduate degree awarded is technically an M.Sc.(Tech.), and the disciplines are General Studies, Finance and Information Systems.
