India's Top Private Engineering Colleges

India’s best and brightest aspiring engineers traditionally apply to study at the country’s most respected publicly funded Institutes of Technology, according to the Wall Street Journal Asia, but when the number of qualified applicants began to outgrow the spaces available, wealthy investors moved to fill the void with private colleges. Students can find spots in competitive private engineering programs that are practically on par with those of the public institutes in annual university rankings published by the news magazine Outlook India, technology magazine Electronics for You (EFY) and business newspaper Mint. Outlook and Mint rate the schools on such factors as intellectual capacity, pedagogic systems, industry interface, placements and infrastructure, while EFY relies solely on recruiters’ opinions.
  1. Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani

    • BITS Pilani was the top private engineering college in India in 2009, according to surveys by Outlook India, Mint and EFY. The school also vaulted into fourth overall in rankings that include publicly funded institutions, breaking the mold of government university dominance in the top 10. Despite being a privately funded college, receiving government funding only for a select few projects, the college has maintained great credibility for decades, according to the news magazine India Today. Likewise, the technology magazine Dataquest claims that BITS Pilani does well in all rated aspects, and “is still cashing in on past efforts and the immense brand value built over time.”

The school offers a number of programs, including Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master of Science, as well as an integrated first-degree program and multidisciplinary master’s courses in engineering technology, information systems and finance.

Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra

    • BIT Mesra ranks second among private engineering schools in both the EFY and Outlook India surveys, third in Mint, and is in the top 25 overall, public and private, in most published rankings. In addition to offering programs in a variety of fields, such as pharmaceuticals and applied sciences, the college’s engineering and technology department features 12 different streams, including mechanical, civil, polymer, production and space engineering.

    PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore

    • A strength that may be unique to PSG College of Technology, founded in 1951 by the charity wing of industrial manufacturer PSG India, is that the campus lies on the same property as the company’s pump and motor factory in Coimbatore. The on-campus manufacturing allows for “sandwich courses,” according to a 2009 Mint article on the top private engineering colleges by Vidhya Sivaramakrishnan, which combine classes in theory with hands-on training. Prospective engineers are keen to study at PSG due in large part to a confidence in finding work placements, noted then-electrical engineering student Afrose Kamal in the Mint article. The college offers a total of 48 full-time and part-time programs in science, engineering and management, and its website boasts alumni in many top industrial, educational and research positions across the globe.

    Thapar University, Patiala

    • Ranked the fourth best private institute in India by EFY and India Today and fifth by Mint, Thapar University sits among the best non-government schools but is not as highly ranked as it once was in surveys that include public colleges. Once an engineering heavyweight, the institute dropped out of the top 20 in overall 2009 rankings because of issues with administration, a lack of Ph.D. degrees and minimal awareness outside of north India, according to Dataquest magazine. Courses are offered in the departments of biotechnology and environmental sciences, chemical engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical and instrumental engineering, electronics and communication engineering and mechanical engineering.

International Institution of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad

    • Unique in its dedication to research, IIIT Hyderabad jumped from relative obscurity and into the limelight in both the 2009 Dataquest survey, where it placed as the best private college in the nation, and the Mint ranking, where it moved up three spots among private schools to second. It was ranked fifth by Outlook India, however, and barely received mention in EFY’s survey of recruiters. Dataquest calls Hyderabad IIIT a special institute, because all academic programs include a research component. "IIIT-H’s calling is research, and that is what purely differentiates the institute from the other IIITs in the country," school director Rajeev Sanghal told Dataquest.

The institute offers programs in such fields as computer science engineering, information security, computer aided structural engineering, bioinformatics and computational linguistics. The school has also diversified from IT, offering dual degrees in computer science and humanities.
