Centrally located in the northern portion of the Florida corridor in Gainesville, the University of Florida's College of Medicine is the top-rated medical school in the state. U.S. News and World Report rated the medical school as the 48th best in the nation for its contributions in the area of medical research. The medical school consists of 44 different research departments, 30 of which are located on the Gainesville campus; 14 are located on the college's satellite campus in Jacksonville. Areas of concentration include aging and geriatric research, anatomy and cell biology, anesthesiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, community health and family medicine, emergency medicine, general medicine, neurology, neuroscience, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pathology and immunology, pediatrics, pharmacology, physiology and functional genomics, psychiatry, radiation oncology, radiology, surgery and urology. Although the name implies a southern location, the University of South Florida (USF) is centrally located in the city of Tampa. Established in 1965, the medical college at USF has grown into a network of teaching hospitals and research centers. Two major research centers, the Moffitt Research Center and the USF Children's Research Institute, constitute the medical school's two primary research facilities. Departments within the medical school include cardiology, dermatology, family medicine, internal medicine, molecular medicine, pharmacology and physiology, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, oncologic sciences, ophthalmology, orthopedics and sports medicine otolaryngology, pathology and cell biology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology and surgery.

Founded in 2006, the University of Central Florida's (UCF) School of Medicine in Orlando was established to provide medical students with the opportunity to pursue a medical career while engaged in interdisciplinary research. The university offers the traditional M.D. program, along with a biomedical sciences program. Biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology and medical laboratory sciences all comprise areas of research interest conducted by the medical program. A Ph.D. in conjunction with other degrees, such as the MBA (Master of Business Administration), is possible through UCF's medical school.
