Top Australia Universities

Higher education in Australia is composed primarily of public institutions funded significantly by the federal government. Eight of these universities, because of their recognition as pioneering research schools, classify themselves as the Group of Eight, a designation that brings each priority funding for research. Admissions to and academic requirements of each university are monitored by the state or territory that the school is in. All schools listed below are members of this Group of Eight.

    • Begun in 1946 as Australia's national university, ANU was founded around four research institutes in physics, medicine, social sciences and Pacific studies. Since then, it has expanded to seven academic colleges, made up of related faculties, research schools and centers. It is ranked No. 1in Australia and ranked in the top 20 by The Times Higher Education Supplement world university rankings.     University of Melbourne

    • Learning at the University of Melbourne, the second oldest university in Australia, is characterized by an emphasis on cultural diversity, knowledge transfer, community involvement and research. It was founded in 1853 and claims to be the second largest research organization in Australia. It recently introduced the controversial Melbourne Model, which combines features of U.S. and European universities and offers degrees in three broad cycles. Each stage of the cycle allows students to gain foundations for employment or continue with further studies.

    University of Sydney

    • In 1850, the University of Sydney broke the traditions of British universities by admitting students on academic merit rather than on the basis of religion or social class. As the first university in Australia, it was also one of the earliest to admit women. This broad and open approach to learning is reflected in its approach to academics. With 13 libraries, 10 campuses and more than 200 clubs and societies, the university makes opportunities for advancement accessible in many forms.

    University of Queensland

    • The University of Queensland is one of the founding members of the distinguished Group of Eight. It is consistently ranked among the top as a research institution and claims campuses at St. Lucia, Gatton and Ipswich as well as more than 40 teaching and research centers in Queensland, including Australia's largest university marine research station on the Great Barrier Reef. The university has seven faculties and includes the faculty of arts, business, economics and law, engineering, architecture and information technology, health sciences, natural resources, agriculture and veterinary science, and social and behavioural sciences.

    Monash University

    • Located in Melbourne, Monash University began in 1958 and is the largest in student enrollment. Along with its eight central campuses within Australia and campuses in Malaysia and South Africa, the university has more than 100 research centers, several libraries and museums. Two of these centers are in Italy and India. This gives the university a special global reach and international diversity in its academic pursuits. Students at Monash can pursue a variety of paths, including single or double degrees, professional or research degrees along with full-, part-time or off-campus attendance options.
