At the master's degree level, New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, offers one of the few fully accredited online graduate degree programs in sociology. The program offers a master of arts degree in sociology and requires that students entering the program already have obtained the bachelor's degree in sociology. Because of the independent nature of online study, the program does not admit students with degrees in other areas; students must already have a firm grasp of sociological issues and methods. This program delves deeper into sociological research, preparing students to eventually obtain the doctorate. Lasting about two years, the program offers courses in comparative family studies, organizational sociology, world systems and education, globalization, medical sociology, the sociology of religion and studies in social class distinctions.
