How to Compare Online Degree Programs

Comparing several online degree programs is helpful in determining which option best meets a student's educational needs. Accreditation, tuition cost, financing and class format are important considerations in selecting an online degree program.
  1. Accreditation

    • Accreditation by an accrediting agency or state-approval agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education ensures that the instruction provided by a college or university meets the standards of a quality education.

    Tuition

    • Tuition varies among institutions and may include textbooks and study materials. Some programs require additional materials to be purchased. Previously earned college credits, if they are transferable, can reduce tuition.

    Credit Transfer

    • Degree credits earned through an accredited institution are not automatically transferable to other schools. Read the school's transfer policy, usually stated in the course catalog, for its requirements for transferring previously earned college credits.

    Financing

    • Compare program scholarships, down payment requirements, financing, payment plan options and financial aid opportunities with each school. Colleges may allow monthly payments or require payment in full for each term. Ask if there are finance charges for extended payment plan options.

    Format

    • The learning format is an important consideration. Some courses are self-paced, while others have set times for online class meetings and instructor conferences. Many online degree programs require examinations to be proctored.
