How to Enroll in Ph.D. Programs

Enrolling in a Ph.D. program is an important decision. The average cost for one year of full-time graduate education in 2007-2008 was $42,800 for a doctoral degree program, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. However, average salaries of individuals who had a Ph.D. in 2011 were $73,000, compared with $67,000 for master's degree-holders and $64,000 for those with a bachelor's degree, reports Indeed.com. Completing a Ph.D. admissions process takes persistence and strong attention to detail.

    • 1

Obtain a copy of your master's degree program transcript. Doctoral programs generally require you to have your master's degree in an area related to your potential Ph.D. program, and a minimum graduate grade point average of about 3.5. For example, to earn your Ph.D. in engineering at California State University, you must have a master's degree in science, math or engineering from an accredited institution. Schools also may require you to submit transcripts from your bachelor's degree or any other coursework you completed after high school.

    • 2

Submit copies of your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores or scores on your Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Many graduate programs look at scores on the GRE, which tests a person's skills in quantitative and verbal reasoning as well as analytical writing. Meanwhile, the GMAT measures a person's math, verbal, writing and analytical skills for many business schools and management education programs.

You must also submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, if you are a foreign applicant and did not receive a degree from an institution where English was the language of instruction.

    • 3

Ask two or three former professors or former/current supervisors for a letter of recommendation. The letters should demonstrate why you are qualified to pursue advanced study and research.

    • 4

Write a statement of intention explaining your reasons for pursuing doctoral studies. Mention your academic and career plans, and note how your past research and work experiences will help you in your Ph.D. program.

    • 5

Complete the doctoral degree program application, which requires you to include data such as your contact information. You likely will have to send a nonrefundable application fee of about $50 or more to accompany the application. Institutions, such as Columbia Business School, require you to send a copy of your resume or curriculum vitae in addition to your application and fee. Many schools actually allow you to submit your application online.

Also, be prepared to interview with faculty members of your potential doctoral degree program if invited to do so.
