Athabasca University is dedicated entirely to providing distance education at the undergraduate and graduate level. It supports an open admission policy that allows individuals to pursue undergraduate studies regardless of any previous post-secondary education. The university provides more than 700 courses and more than 90-degree programs. Coursework is delivered through correspondence print materials mailed to students and online web-based resources.
A wide range of undergraduate majors are offered, including social science, the humanities, health administration, human resources, management, human services, communication studies, criminal justice, science and nursing. Graduate degrees are also available in business administration, counseling, distance education, information systems, health studies and nursing. The university is accredited through the Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education and Technology. It is also recognized by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) in the United States.

The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University provides many distance education options. Coursework is delivered through both print materials and an online web-based platform that allows students to log in to access study guides, take tests and participate in discussions with fellow students and instructors. Students may take courses individually or as part of a number of undergraduate and post-graduate certificate credentials, including accounting, digital geography systems, business management, English as a second language, food security, landscape design, nonprofit management, public relations, publishing and marketing. Thompson Rivers University provides a wide selection of independent home study courses and programs through their Open Learning division. Coursework is delivered in scheduled or self-paced formats that use print and web-based materials. Undergraduate degrees and certificates are available in many areas, including the liberal arts, music, fine art and design, management, accounting, public administration, education, health science, commerce, marketing, information technology, computer science and tourism management. High school completion certificates and diplomas are also offered.
