How to Get a Ph.D. Online

An increasing number of traditional and distance learning institutions offer online Ph.D. programs that appeal to a broad range of students. Although online doctoral programs are often as rigorous as their brick and mortar counterparts, they offer flexibility that allows people with full schedules to pursue an advanced degree at their own pace.

Check for accreditation. Accreditation boards independently review postsecondary-level academic programs to ensure quality and consistency of education. Traditional colleges receive accreditation from one of six regional agencies. The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) accredits distance learning programs and has an excellent reputation. A degree from an unaccredited school lacks value to many employers and other institutions where you may want to pursue further education.

Choose an area of inquiry with online Ph.D. programs. As distance learning gains popularity, online colleges continually increase course and degree offerings. Despite rapid growth, universities do not offer online Ph.D. programs in every discipline. The most common online Ph.D. programs include psychology, education, public health and business.

Take advantage of the unique qualities of distance learning. Successful Ph.D. candidates network and collaborate with other doctoral students, work with professors from countries all over the world and participate in online discussion and study groups.

Look further than distance learning colleges. Many traditional universities now offer online courses and some allow students to pursue advanced degrees online. If you live close to a university, you may be able to fulfill some requirements online and others on campus.

    • 5

Build self-discipline. Doctoral programs are difficult in general, but fulfilling degree requirements online poses distinct challenges. You must be self-disciplined, highly motivated, an independent learner and somewhat computer savvy to succeed. Keep regular study hours, attend all virtual classes, meet self-imposed and external deadlines and set long-term goals.

    • 6

Find a mentor. A disadvantage of online education is the lack of consistent interaction with professors. Successful doctoral students develop relationships with professors who evaluate their work, share their academic experience, provide professional references and make introductions to distinguished colleagues. Find a faculty member who shares your research and professional interests, can devote time to reading and commenting on your work and has a good reputation in the field.

Meet all degree requirements. To obtain a Ph.D. in most areas you must successfully complete the following: a minimum number of classroom hours, some in a designated course; at least one comprehensive exam; and a dissertation. Some degree programs also require clinical experience and completion of collaborative projects.
