Online Sociology Graduate Programs

The study of sociology involves the study of human society through its various institutions, ideas, attitudes and through its evolution over time. Although a bachelor's degree in sociology might prove marketable in the general job market, employment in the field of sociology itself usually requires a master's degree. A master's degree is needed for those who want to pursue advanced research in the field or teach at the collegiate level. An online graduate degree in sociology can be the first step in that direction.
  1. Union Institute and University

    • Union Institute and University offers a Master of Arts degree online in the field of social leadership. This is a degree based on the applied principles extrapolated from sociological study. Public policy and social issues are the primary concerns of the degree program.

Students are expected to engage in advanced sociological research in each of these topics and learn how to apply what is learned in that research to various leadership settings. The intention is to develop societal institutional models that best serve society as a whole. Union Institute and University is regionally accredited by the North Central Association of the Higher Learning Commission.

Its sociology program is a reflection of the overall mission of the school, which is to not only learn through advanced research, but also to apply that research in a practical setting.

    New Mexico State University

    • A second option for an online master's degree in sociology is the program offered by New Mexico State University (NMSU). NMSU offers a Master of Arts degree in sociology that builds upon the foundation established in most bachelor's degree programs.

The program does not accept students who hold a bachelor's degree in another field and wish to pursue studies in sociology in addition to their baccalaureate studies. This program is primarily research-oriented and, unlike the Union program, not entirely concerned with the application of the implications of sociological research. Instead, the NMSU MA degree is intended to build a solid foundation for doctoral studies.

This two-year course of study requires courses in areas such as globalization, medical sociology, organizational sociology, sociological methods, world education systems, religion, comparative family studies and social stratification.

    Atlantic Intercontinental University

    • A third option for an online master's degree in sociology is Atlantic Intercontinental University's (AIU) Master of Arts or Master of Science degree program. These degree programs are flexible programs of study that allow students to choose their own curriculum based on their own professional goals and needs.

Students can pursue courses in areas such as urban poverty, 20th century education, urban sociology, introduction to sociological movements and quantitative methods in sociology. AIU is not a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Potential students should weigh the potential downside of non-regional accreditation, which AIU has opted for instead. This private accreditation can be an obstacle to being accepted into a doctoral program and might sometimes (but not always) be frowned upon by potential employers.
