  1. Midtown Memphis

    • The University of Memphis, formerly Memphis State University, is one of the largest universities in Tennessee. Founded in 1912, this four-year institution is home to the Humphreys School of Law, Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology and the FedEx Institute of Technology. The school mascot is the Tigers. The university's campus is between Poplar and Southern Avenues, 10 minutes east of the downtown area.

      Located between Union and Central Avenues, Christian Brothers University is a four-year Catholic University; the school is less than a mile from Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. This university was founded in 1871 by a local Catholic order, the Christian Brothers, who operates the school. This university's mascot is the Buccaneers. Christian Brothers was a men-only school until 1970.

    Specialty Colleges

    • The Memphis College of Art is adjacent to Memphis' Overton Park and the Brooks Museum of Art. This four-year college specializes in fine art and offers studies in photography, animation, sculpture, digital media and sequential narrative. The school sponsors museum seminar trips, which allows students to visit art institutes throughout the world.

      Victory University is a four-year Christian university and it emphasizes studies in biblical doctrine or the combination of secular studies, like math, science and politics, with a Christian worldview. One of Victory University's colleges is the Department of Bible and Theology. This for-profit university was formerly Crichton College, until its name change in 2010.

    Downtown Memphis

    • Southwest Tennessee Community College is a two-year junior college on downtown Memphis' Union Avenue. STCC was founded when Shelby State Community College and the State Technical Institute of Memphis merged in 2000. This community college offers Associate Degrees. STCC's mascot is the Saluqis. This school is one of the largest community colleges in Tennessee.

      Lemoyne-Owen College is on the southern edge of downtown Memphis, right off Walker Avenue. This four-year college was founded in 1862 and is a member of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities; African-Americans make up the majority of the student body. Lemoyne-Owen College's mascot is the Magicians.

    Satellite Campuses

    • Situated in eastern Memphis, the Memphis extension of Belhaven University is on Poplar Avenue. Belhaven's main campus is in Jackson, Mississippi, approximately four hours south of Memphis. Belhaven is a four-year accredited university and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of America. This extension of Belhaven offers bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration and science.

      Downtown Memphis is home to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This satellite campus offers doctorate degrees in physical therapy, dental surgery and medicine. The Health Science Center also offers assistance to graduates seeking medical residencies and fellowships. The main campus of the University of Tennessee is in Knoxville, located on the eastern side of the state.
