Photography Major Colleges

The Bureau of Labor statistics states that the job outlook for photographers is average, with an anticipated 12 percent job growth through the 2008-18 period. However, due to the attractive nature of the job, many people train for this career. There are several schools which offer photography majors for those who are interested in photography as a career path.
  1. The New England Institute of Art

    • The New England Institute of Art is located in Boston, Massachusetts. This school offers two photography degrees: Photography-Associate in Science and Photography-Bachelor of Science. The Photography-Associate in Science program teaches students the communication skills and business knowledge needed to work effectively with clients, as well as helps them to develop their creativity and imagination. Students are expected to complete courses like lighting, color management and photojournalism. The photography degree program is a bachelor's-level degree program which teaches students the technical and creative skills needed to compete favorably in their chosen fields. They are also taught about the business aspect of photography. Graduates of this program can pursue entry-level jobs in such fields as photojournalism, commercial photography and digital photography.

    Brooks Institute of Photography

    • The Brooks Institute of Photography offers four photography majors. They are: Commercial Photography, Photo Media Photography, Advertising Photography and Portraiture. The Commercial Photography Program is designed to help students prepare themselves for a career in the broad range of commercial photography applications, such as stock photography and editorial (magazine). This major is appropriate for catalog photographers, freelance or staff magazine photographers, architectural photographers and industrial photographers. The Advertising program is for students who wish to train for a career as self-employed advertising photographers, studio managers or art directors. The Photo Media program prepares students for career opportunities in the production of photography, while the Portraiture Program helps students develop the skills needed to establish their own portraiture photography studio or to work as a manager in a larger studio.

    Hallmark Institute of Photography

    • The Hallmark Institute of Photography offers a professional photography program which is divided into seven primary courses of study. Photography Arts & Technique includes sub-courses like Basic Photography, Visual Arts, Posing, Location Lighting, Assisting, Stock Photography and Advanced Lighting. Digital Imaging teaches students the intricacies of running a modern imaging business, and includes sub-courses like Digital Asset Management 1 and Tools & Techniques of Digital Imaging. Other main courses are: Marketing, Design & Imaging Arts, Finance, Personnel and Management.

    International Institute of Design & Technology-Tampa

    • The International Institute of design, located in Tampa, Florida, offers two photography programs: Associate of Science in Professional Photography and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Professional Photography. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography includes courses like Commercial Photography, Imaging Software, Video, Studio Lighting, Portraiture and Location Lighting. The aim of this program is to equip students with the technical and creative skills needed to succeed in photography.
