Music Major Colleges

Colleges that provide majors in music range from small private institutions that specialize in this field to large universities with music schools included among their many departments. In addition to providing Bachelor of Arts degrees, many colleges also have programs for master's and doctorate degrees. Colleges also provide opportunities for students to participate in various musical groups and receive hands-on training.
  1. Princeton University

    • Princeton University in New Jersey offers a major in music for undergraduates as well as a graduate program where students study composition or musicology. The undergraduate program has an emphasis on writing music as well as writing about music. Students can earn a certificate in the program as a music major, or as a major in another department of one of the most respected universities in the country. Courses feature world-famous composers and musical historians. Students receive instrument and voice lessons in the studios of top professionals. They can also perform in the school's six jazz groups, two orchestras, three choruses, a wind ensemble, an opera theater and a musical comedy troupe.

    Jacobs School of Music

    • The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington has more than 1,600 students who study music to go along the university's broad academic curriculum. The Jacobs School has 180 full-time faculty members. The school also regularly brings in noted musicians and scholars to teach master classes and provide guest lectures. The school offers more than 1,1000 performances a year, including seven full operas. Facilities for the school of music include five buildings with recital halls, over 170 practice rooms, and choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in music are all available.

    Julliard

    • Julliard's music division is the largest of the school's three divisions that also include dance and drama. Located in New York City and one of the most well-known music schools in the nation, Julliard's music department has approximately 600 students from more than 40 countries. The faculty includes internationally-known scholars, soloists, and chamber and orchestral musicians. Some members of its faculty have received Pulitzer Prizes along with Grammy and Academy Awards. Chamber music ensembles at the school include the Julliard String Quartet, the American Brass Quintet, the New York Woodwind Quintet and Julliard Baroque. Students take courses in their chosen area as well as a range electives that are part of an undergraduate liberal arts program. Undergraduates can earn Bachelor of Music degrees. Graduate-level degrees include Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts.

    Gonzaga University

    • Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, is a Jesuit University that offers both a Bachelor of Arts in music and music education. The degree in music includes performance and composition concentrations along with a general study of music. The bachelor of arts in music education certifies the student to teach music at elementary and secondary schools in most of the states. Instrument ensembles at the school include a symphony orchestra, a jazz ensemble and a pep band. It also has a wide range of musical groups, including the Gonzaga University choir. The bachelor's degrees in music provide an emphasis on performance, composition and general study.
