Music Colleges in India

India's history stretches back thousands of years and for much of that time, music has been a highly regarded tradition. Today, the country, with its more than 1 billion residents, is home to several music colleges that cover numerous styles of music, from Western classical to traditional Indian.
  1. KM Music Conservatory

    • The KM Music Conservatory in Chennai focuses on Indian and Western music education as well as on teaching students music production and engineering. The school meets the international standards of music education, which according to the KM Music Conservatory makes it \"the first of its kind in India.\" Some of the majors offered by the college are Western voice and Hindustani, piano and composition. Diplomas are offered for the two-year program at KM Music Conservatory, but in order to receive a degree, students must spend a third and final year at Middlesex University in London, with which the school has a partnership.

    Delhi School of Music

    • The Delhi School of Music, established by the Delhi Music Society, was founded in 1966, just 13 years after the founding of the society itself. The school prides itself on being \"the premier institution for the teaching of Western classic music in the capital.\" The Delhi School of Music has partnerships with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in England and Trinity College of Music in London. The college focuses on individual and ensemble performance, as well as on general music appreciation.

    The Music Academy, Madras

    • The idea for the Music Academy in Madras first took shape after the All-India Music Conference was held in the city in 1927. The purpose of the school was and still is \"fostering Indian music and to encourage the study of the theory and practice of music.\" In fact, the school has a specific emphasis on the south Indian music known as Carnatic. The Music Academy has two buildings: the 1,600-capacity TTK Auditorium, where concerts are performed, and the Kasturi Srinivasan Hall, which houses classrooms, recording rooms and a smaller auditorium. The Kasturi Srinivasan Hall is also home to the school's extensive musical library. The Music Academy is known for the many festivals it puts on each year, including the December festival, the dance festival and the Spirit of Youth festival.

    Calcutta School of Music

    • The Calcutta School of Music was founded in 1915 by Dr. Phillipé Sandré. The education offered at the school is quite broad, focusing on \"all forms of European, Indian and Oriental musical instruments and the development of music and theory appertaining thereto.\" The Indian music program was inaugurated by the world-famous sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar. The Calcutta School of Music works closely with the city itself, encouraging students to arrange or perform at neighborhood and community concerts. The programs offered at the school cover orchestral, chamber and solo performances.
