Founded in 1867, the New England Conservatory is the nation's oldest private conservatory, and is designated as a National Historic Landmark. As of 2009, the school had about 750 students. The school offers degree programs in orchestral instruments, piano, jazz and contemporary improvisation, voice, composition, music history and theory, music education and world music. Undergraduates work toward the professional Bachelor of Music (BM) degree and graduate students work toward Master of Music (MM) degrees and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degrees. The school also offers preparatory school and continuing education programs.

The Berklee College of Music is a private college that was founded in 1945. As of 2009, the school had about 4,000 students. The school specializes in jazz and rock music, and offers degree programs in 23 departments within four primary divisions, including music technology and professional education, performance and writing. Possible majors include film scoring, jazz composition and music business and management. Notable musicians and composers who have studied at Berklee include John Mayer, Meredith Brooks, Gavin DeGraw and Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks.

The Yale School of Music was founded in 1894. The school offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduate music majors can work toward a dual Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Music (MM) degree and graduate students can work toward a Master of Music (MM) degree, Master of Musical Arts (MMA) degree, Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree or a professional diploma or certificate.
