Art Colleges in New England

Some of the country's top-ranked art colleges are located in New England. Prospective college students hoping to study art can choose between professional art schools awarding Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degrees, or renowned national universities awarding Bachelor of Art (BA) degrees and the opportunity to pursue other fields in addition to art. Both kinds of schools often offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in art.
  1. Rhode Island School of Design

    • Rhode Island School of Design, founded in 1877, was ranked 1st in US News and World Report's 2008 rankings of fine arts graduate schools. As of 2009, RISD had about 2,200 graduate and undergraduate students. Rhode Island School of Design offers graduate degrees in 16 different areas, including ceramics, digital media, glass, graphic design, painting, printmaking, sculpture and more. RISD's undergraduates can choose from 16 different majors, but all students must complete a one-year, interdisciplinary foundation program before choosing a concentration. Most RISD undergraduates work toward a BFA degree. Undergraduates can complete a dual degree program with RISD and nearby Brown University, but they must submit separate, complete applications to both schools to be considered for this program.

    Yale University School of Art

    • The Yale University School of Art was ranked 2nd in US News and World Report's 2008 rankings of fine arts graduate schools. The School of Art offers Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in four different areas, including graphic design, painting and printmaking, sculpture and photography. The School of Art also offers an undergraduate major. Undergraduates must pass a faculty review at the end of their second year to be able to enter the major, and can then choose from seven different studio concentrations. Undergraduate art students at Yale work toward the BA degree rather than the BFA. They also have the opportunity to complete a minor or second major in another academic department at Yale.
