Mechanical Engineering Colleges in Illinois

Colleges and universities that offer degrees in mechanical engineering are seeing an increase in students in this major. The website EngineerSalary.com says employment of mechanical engineers--253,800 were working in 2008--is expected to grow rapidly. Most states have at least one program; for aspiring mechanical engineers in Illinois, there are a variety of choices.

    • At Bradley University in Peoria, class sizes are small and mechanical engineering students can participate in laboratories and projects that involve robotics, fluid dynamics, microprocessors and solar energy. Students who excel may be invited to join an honors society or special student group, such as Pi Tau Sigma, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers. A minimum grade point average of 2.25 is required for graduation. Off-campus job placement and internship help is available through the Engineering Practicum and the Materials Testing and Modeling Lab.

    IIT Armour College of Engineering

    • The Illinois Institute of Technology Armour College of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering. The Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering program offers instruction in transportation development, machinery control, medical device technology, fossil and nuclear fuel generation and distribution of alternative energy sources. Graduate students can take classes online to earn a master's degree in manufacturing engineering, working with an adviser. Two on-site research centers are available to help students further their work, along with multiple laboratories and internship opportunities.

    Northern Illinois University

    • Northern Illinois University offers bachelor and master of science degrees in mechanical engineering. Students take classes in areas such as energy conversion, heat transfer, solid mechanics and manufacturing. Requirements for graduation are a 2.0 or higher grade point average and at least 120 semester hours of study. A variety of laboratories are available, including the vibrations lab, computer-aided design lab and materials analysis lab. Student groups include honorary fraternities such as Epsilon Pi Tau and Eta Kappa Nu, plus student chapters of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Interested students may apply to study abroad, enrolling in two courses: Mechanical Robots and Globalization of Manufacturing Industry in China.
