Small Illinois Engineering Colleges

Engineering is a discipline that incorporates science and mathematics to improve various aspects of society. The field of engineering is used to build structures, develop medical devices, solve environmental problems and advance technology. Engineering programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate level and are offered at four-year colleges and universities. While some of the larger colleges and universities in the state of Illinois offer programs in engineering, degrees in this field are also available in smaller schools.
  1. Bradley University

    • With a student population of about 5,800 as of 2011, Bradley University has departments in civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering. The civil engineering program educates students about surveying, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering and structural analysis. The electrical and computer engineering department offers both bachelor's and master's degree programs. Students study and research topics in biomedical applications, microwave engineering, communications and signal processing, and renewable energy sources. Programs in mechanical engineering teach students about robotics, energy conservation, manufacturing and computer-aided design.

    Eastern Illinois University

    • Eastern Illinois University has an enrollment of just under 12,000 students in 2011 and offers a Bachelor of Science in Applied Engineering and Technology. The program covers topics in technological studies, technical development, professional development, economics, statistics and physical sciences. Core curriculum courses include material technology, construction equipment, economics and finite mathematics. Graduates of the program are prepared to work in the technical management field within a variety of industries, including businesses, government and manufacturing industries.

    Illinois Institute of Technology

    • Located in Chicago, the Illinois Institute of Technology has a student population of about 7,700, as of 2011. The ITT Armour College of Engineering offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering. Engineering departments at the college include biomedical; chemical and biological; civil, architectural and environmental; electrical and computer; and mechanical, materials and aerospace. In addition to educating and training students in a variety of engineering disciplines, students can also perform research at The Wagner Institute for Sustainable Energy Research; The Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering; The Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering; and The Center of Excellence in Polymer Science and Engineering.

    Olivet Nazarene University

    • Olivet Nazarene University has about 4,600 students and offers an undergraduate degree program in engineering. Accredited concentrations within the degree program include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and general engineering. Students are required to complete 128 credits and have access to the school's engineering and design studios and computer labs. The program also requires senior students to complete a capstone senior design project.
