Established in 1989, Allen College is a private, nonsectarian institution affiliated with the Iowa Health System. Home to less than 500 students, the school is in the suburban community of Waterloo. Among the programs offered are an Associate of Science degree in radiologic technology, Bachelor of Health Science degrees in diagnostic medical sonography, medical laboratory science and nuclear medicine, and a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in nursing. All students participate in clinical internships as a part of the required curricula. Approximately 87 percent of freshmen and 90 percent of continuing students receive some type of financial aid while studying at Allen, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." For student activities, there are six groups on campus, including a student-run newspaper.

A non-religious liberal arts college, Upper Iowa University is in Fayette, a rural area 65 miles from Cedar Rapids. There are over 600 undergraduate students with the following majors available to them: accounting, banking and finance, information systems management, marketing, graphic design, athletic training, and healthcare administration and psychology. Internships are offered in many majors, and students have the option to study abroad in a variety of countries. Most majors allow students to attend courses year-round, earning a bachelor's degree in three years rather than the usual four. In addition to federal and state financial aid programs, the college offers a limited number of work-study placements. The school sponsors 17 intercollegiate and eight intramural sports teams. Approximately 19 percent of men and 40 percent of women at the school belong to one of the college's 11 Greek organizations, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." Students can participate in more than 30 student organizations such as political, religious, professional, and arts groups.

United Methodist Church founded Iowa Wesleyan College in 1842 in Mt. Pleasant, a small town 45 miles from Iowa City. Since that time, the school has grown to an enrollment of more than 800 students. The highest-rated programs at the college include accounting, business administration, management, fine arts, and English, while the elementary education and nursing majors are the largest programs according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." Internships are offered in every major, and students can study abroad in Japan, China or Mexico or in Washington, D.C. for one semester. Nearly 98 percent of all students benefit from some type of financial aid while attending the university. For athletes, the college has 12 intercollegiate and 22 intramural sports teams. Two Greek organizations and 35 students groups are located on campus.
