Iowa Technical Colleges

When one thinks of the great state of Iowa, technical schools may not be what come to mind. Over the years, the term "technical school" or "trade school" has grown to define most schools that teach more of a specific skill rather than instilling a basic education on students. There are options for those living in Iowa who wish to attend technical schools.
  1. Vatterott College

    • Vatterott College has campuses scattered through out the country. The Iowa campus is located in Des Moines. Vatterott offers an associate's degree for computer systems and network technology, dental assistant specialist, diesel mechanics and medical assistants with limited radiography. The Vatterott facility in Des Moines is a relatively small campus. Its student capacity is only around 500 students a semester. The school restricts its class sizes to no more than 30 students. While its facilities might be small compared to a major university, Vatterott does have everything you'll need to be successful in these fields including x-ray bays and a large mechanic's shop area.

    Des Moines Area Community College

    • The Des Moines Area Community College offers a wide range of programs for those seeking their associate's degree. These programs range from Biotechnology to Veterinary Technology. Des Moines offers classes both on campus and online for the convenience of those who don't have a wide open schedule. Their eight week program is designed specifically for working students who can only attend at night and on the weekend. They require all new full-time students to either submit an ACT score of no lower than 19 or submit transcripts displaying completion of basic college courses. If you don't have either you can take an assessment test that will score your proficiency in math, reading and writing.

    Kirkwood Community College

    • Kirkwood has campuses in many cities across Iowa including Williamsburg and Iowa City. They offer only two different kinds of associate's degrees. What the school lacks in the amounts of degrees however it makes up for with the different technology programs they have. Kirkwood has 14 different tech programs including telecommunication technology, dental technology and architectural technology. Some of them have transfer agreements with four-year schools to make your transition from a two-year school to a four-year school as smooth as possible.

    Brown Mackie College

    • Brown Mackie College is located in Bettendorf, Iowa. Brown Mackie offers many programs to its students including an associate's degree in information technology. Where Brown Mackie sets itself apart from other institutes of higher learning is in its course and curriculum structure. Students at Brown Mackie take one course a month. Brown Mackie feels this allows students the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in a course and it gives the opportunity to work at their own pace without falling to far behind.
