The University of Virginia (UVA) School of Engineering and Applied Science, located in Charlottesville, is one of the top engineering programs in the state. U.S. News & World Report ranked the UVA program No. 37 in the nation in 2009. The school's engineering department consists of several different divisions. Mechanical engineering is offered through the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. At the undergraduate level, UVA offers the bachelor's degree but emphasizes research in the same way that it does for its graduate programs. Graduate degrees include the master of science, master of engineering and the Ph.D. There are three primary research areas emphasized by the UVA program: solid mechanics, dynamics and controls and thermofluids.

Also located in northern Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field of mechanical engineering. The mechanical engineering department at VCU offers bachelor's degrees in both the fields of mechanical and nuclear engineering. At the graduate level, the department offers both the master of science (MS) and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. The graduate programs are designed specifically for students pursing research in the fields of design and manufacturing, materials, computational mechanics and thermal sciences. Specifically, the program focuses on several areas of study within these fields such as flow controls, nanotechnology and smart materials, robotics, alternative and direct energy conversion and microelectricalmechanical systems.

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia, also offers and undergraduate program in the field of mechanical engineering. Because of the broadness of the field itself and because of its military association, VMI offers the bachelor of science (BS) in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on aerospace engineering. Courses offered within the program include topics such as CAD applications and solid modeling, materials, statics, programming tools, solid mechanics, dynamics, fluid and thermodynamics, mechanical analysis and design and heat and mass transfer, among others.
