This institute offers courses with the aim of producing the best engineers globally. Its mechanical engineering department is one of the oldest departments of the institute and has the biggest enrollment, with 650 students. It offers two undergraduate programs: Mechanical Engineering and Production & Industrial Engineering. Many students who graduate from here end up in top positions in industry, academia and the government in India or abroad. The department has four master's programs: Design of Mechanical Equipment, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering and Thermal Engineering. It has a faculty of 50 and a technical staff of 43 who are associated with 23 different laboratories. The department has more than 250 computing systems and workstations, with a range of software products that cover all areas of mechanical engineering.

The Civil Engineering College Calcutta was established in 1856 to introduce engineering education to India. In 1921, the name was changed to Bengal Engineering College, and in 2004 it became a university. The Mechanical Engineering Department started in 1921, when a diploma course was offered. Now there are both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The department has laboratory facilities backed by applied mechanics and central workshop facilities. Faculty members are often engaged in research and have had research papers published in national and international journals. The department solves problems and provides services for industries. Some of the students get jobs even before graduating.
