The associate's degree distance-learning program in mechanical engineering is designed to prepare students for entry-level careers at manufacturing or industrial plants, laboratory and construction sites, private engineering firms and government agencies. The program runs four semesters. During their first two semesters, students take introductory courses in mechanical engineering. Course offerings include physical science, technical mathematics, basic drafting and fluid mechanics. In their last two semesters, students take more advanced courses. The Master of Science program in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois is a fully online course with no classroom visit requirement. Prospective applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.25. In addition to providing an application, candidates must include a statement of purpose along with their application. Students in the mechanical engineering program have the option of completing a thesis instead of enrolling in formal course work by taking fewer credits. Course offerings include energy conservation systems, introduction to nonlinear dynamics, hazardous and solid waste management and quality engineering. Transfer students are eligible to have up to eight credits applied to their course work. Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a Master of Science degree.
