Located in Muncie, the Ball State University School of Music offers undergraduate degrees in music performance, music education, music theory and composition and music technology. If you plan to continue your studies at the graduate level, you can pursue a master of music or a master of arts in music --- or take your academic career all the way in the School of Music's doctoral degree program. In addition, the school offers an artist diploma program to provide specialized musical training for candidates already in possession of a baccalaureate degree.
Once accepted, you'll join a student body of about 400 undergrads and about 100 grad students. The school expects each student to attend weekly recitals and to perform in ensembles. As of 2011, tuition was $7,508 in-state per year and out-of-state tuition was $20,960. Graduate students paid an additional $30 fee per credit hour.
As a part of the Indiana University system's flagship campus, the Jacobs School of Music boasts an opera stage, three concert halls and the nationally recognized William and Gayle Cook Music Library. Jacobs School of Music offers baccalaureate degree programs in music, music education or science in music and an outside field, as well as both baccalaureate and associate level degrees in recording arts and an associate degree in string instrument technology. Jacobs also offers master's and doctoral level programs of study.
Once admitted you'll have plenty of opportunities to practice and perform in one of the school's six orchestras, 13 choirs or eight bands. The school's approximately 1,600 students perform together in ensembles regardless of their undergraduate or graduate standing. In 2011, a year of undergraduate of tuition cost Indiana residents $4,062. Out-of-state undergrads paid $13,392.50. Graduate tuition was $443.04 per credit for in-state students and $1,290.29 per credit for out-of-state students.
The Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts offers undergraduate students the opportunity to complete a degree in music, music education or science in music and an outside field. At the graduate level, students can pursue a master of music degree. Raclin's artist diploma program provides specialized training to artists who already hold an academic degree, while the school's performer diploma program accepts outstanding musicians who do not plan to pursue a college degree.
All admitted students will perform in one of Raclin's 10 ensembles, which include a gospel choir, a philharmonic orchestra and a jazz ensemble. As of 2011, undergraduate tuition cost $194.75 per credit hour for Indiana residents and $539 for non-residents. Graduate tuition cost $230.29 per credit hour for residents and $566.82 for non-residents.
Music students at the Purdue University Fort Wayne College of Visual and Performing Arts can choose to pursue a bachelor of music, bachelor of music education or bachelor of science in music degree. Candidates for a bachelor of science in music degree specialize either in music therapy or music and an outside field. Music therapy majors acquire hands-on experience in the IFPW Music Therapy Clinic, an approximately 40-client treatment facility and the only on-campus, state university based clinic in Indiana.
As of 2011, Indiana natives paid $242.40 per credit hour, while non-resident students paid $582.20 per credit hour.
