    • University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) offers 80 majors in six colleges plus graduate degrees. The student population of 21,000 is 75 percent Mexican-American, reflecting the general population of the region. UTEP strives to be a model for Hispanic education. Some Mexican students cross the border to attend classes in a special arrangement. The university was started in 1914 as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy.

    El Paso Community College, Valle Verde Campus

    • El Paso Community College (EPCC) has five campuses. The largest and most centrally located is Valle Verde, with a student population of more than 14,000. Students can earn 130 associate degrees or transfer to a four-year school with the 2+2 option, which guarantees students admission to any four-year Texas college or university as a junior. Students in the 2+2 program must successfully complete the required two-year academic regimen at EPCCC.

    Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

    • The Texas Tech center is for third- and fourth-year medical students and residents. This unique school also is a research center and medical center operating clinics around the city. TTUHSC was formed with the added goal of bringing quality health care to under-served parts of the El Paso region. It maintains a teaching affiliation with three hospitals: Thompson, Providence and William Beaumont Army Medical Center. In the near future, the school of medicine will offer a full four-year curriculum.

    Western Technical College

    • Of the technical schools and colleges in the city, Western Technical College is the largest, with some 700 students seeking hands-on experience and career development. Training is offered in massage therapy, electrical engineering, information systems and security, health information technology, medical/clinical assistant, automotive technology, welding, diesel, refrigeration and HVAC, and physical therapist assistant. Students participate in externship programs, which provide an opportunity to experience an authentic work environment while continuing their training. Western Technical is a private, family-owned and -operated training school established in 1970. It was originally named Western Wisconsin Technical College.
