APA Accredited Psychology Graduate Programs

The American Psychological Association (APA) awards accredited status to doctoral training programs in areas such as clinical, school and counseling psychology. Accreditation is granted based on a site visit and review of program curriculum and requirements in accordance with the association's guidelines and principles for professional psychology programs. Accredited programs are listed on the APA's website, and the association notes that accreditation is a voluntary process.
  1. City University of New York

    • The City University of New York (CUNY) offers an APA-accredited doctoral degree in clinical psychology, which is one of several concentrations in psychology available to CUNY graduate students. Clinical psychology doctoral students take most of their classes at the City College uptown Manhattan campus in Harlem. Clinical psychology training prepares students to diagnose and treat mental health problems in individuals, families and groups. CUNY trains students via a combination of classroom learning, research and case supervision. Degree candidates complete at least 90 credits of coursework along with a one-year internship. They must also successfully pass two doctoral examinations and defend a dissertation. The program is competitive, with 12 to 15 students accepted annually. Applicants submit undergraduate transcripts (which must show at least 15 psychology credits), test scores for the general GRE and the psychology GRE and two recommendations.

    University of Georgia

    • The APA-accredited doctoral program in counseling psychology at the University of Georgia trains students as scientist-practitioners who will contribute to the field through research and providing quality clinical care. Students in the doctoral program take three years of courses in research design, counseling psychology foundations and general psychology foundations that are supplemented by a one-year internship. Internships expose students to various patient groups including undergraduate and graduate students and juveniles in the criminal justice system. The counseling psychology program is open to students who hold a master's degree in psychology or a related field and in recent years, all admitted students have received a fellowship or assistantship to help offset the cost of tuition. The university notes on its website that competitive applicants have a graduate GPA of at least 3.5 and a minimum score of 1100 on the GRE. For the academic year 2010-2011, the department seeks to admit 10 students.
