Graduate Psychology PhD Programs in Southern California

According to the United States Department of Labor, job opportunities for psychologists are expected to grow around 12 percent between 2008 and 2018, with most of these new positions requiring a Ph.D. The need for psychologists in Southern California is expected to be even greater, with demand growing by 20 percent in Orange County alone between 2006 and 2016, creating plenty of new job opportunities for the graduates of Southern California's Ph.D. programs. Doctorate programs in psychology vary in focus, from experimental psychology programs that prepare students for research and academic careers to clinical and school psychology programs that emphasize working with clients or students. While competition for admission to Ph.D. programs in psychology is fierce, graduates can find work in a variety of settings. In Southern California specifically, job opportunities are expected to be most plentiful in residential care centers, hospitals, and elementary and secondary schools.

In addition to coursework, all students are required to serve as a teaching assistant in an undergraduate class for one quarter in their first year of the program. Students in the clinical program also complete a year-long supervised internship. New students may begin the program in Fall Quarter only and all students are expected to attend full-time.
