As the world of online learning continues to grow in popularity and availability, so do alternative paths to teacher certification, largely facilitated by online programs. While each state has its own set of tests for teacher certification specific to each subject area, online universities can provide the background and education necessary to fully qualify teachers in a variety of categories.

    • The University of Phoenix offers teaching certification through its Bachelor of Science in education/elementary teacher education, as well as its Master of Arts programs in early childhood education, elementary teacher education, secondary teacher education and special education.     University of Texas at El Paso

    • Students work as paid teachers in classrooms while pursuing online coursework through the University of Texas at El Paso's College of Education program. Students prepare for certification in 12 to 18 months through online coursework, alongside teaching in real classrooms under the guidance of mentors.     • Kaplan University has a number of alternative online programs, many of them state-specific, though open to all students. In the state of Iowa for example, Kaplan offers an online Master of Arts in Teaching that guides teachers through the program while a combination of online coursework, mentoring of students, and practical teaching experiences. Students become prepared for certification credentials to teach in grades 5 through 12, with state-specific tests required for relevant subject areas.

    Nova Southeastern University

    • Through Nova Southern University students can obtain a Master's in teaching in less than a year, while preparing for certification in their specific state. Certification areas include Elementary Reading, Elementary Math, Curriculum and Instruction, and K-12 Technology. Terms are eight to 10 weeks in length, with one seven-week summer internship.
