How to Cite an NIH Publication in APA Format

Each style of academic writing has its own guidelines on how to cite specific sources. The American Psychological Association style requires all documents, such as those published by the National Institute of Health to include as much of the following information as possible: author(s) name(s), date of publication, document title, volume number, publication number, place of publication and publication name.

      Record the names of all the authors in alphabetical order, using the last name and the first initial of each contributor. For example, if the publication was written by Jane Doe and John Smith, your would reference them as follows: Doe, J., & Smith, J. Separate the names with commas.

      Add the year of publication in parentheses after the author names. Insert a period after the closing parenthesis. For example: Doe, J., & Smith, J. (2010).

      Type the name of the article you are referencing, and only capitalize the first letter of the title and subtitle (if there is one). Make sure the title is in italics. Insert a period after the last word of the title. For example: Doe, J., & Smith, J. (2010). Publication title: Publication sub-title.

      Type the volume number of the publication if it is a multivolume work in parentheses using "Vol." as an abbreviation. Insert a period after the closing parenthesis. For example: Doe, J., & Smith, J. (2010). Publication title: Publication sub-title (Vol. 2).
