How to Cite a Presentation in APA Format

Social scientists and other academics, researchers and writers rely on APA, or American Psychological Association, style to cite the references they use to inform their work. While some APA rules can be confusing, the format for citing a presentation is straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

You only need to cite a presentation in your APA reference list if you have "recoverable data" from that presentation, according to Peggy Roske, a librarian at the College of St. Benedict/St. John's University, In other words, if a handout, conference abstract, or report based on the presentation exists, cite it in the reference list. If not, all that is required is an in-text citation.

    • 2

Follow APA style for formatting the presenter's name or names just as you would when citing the author or authors of a journal article or book in your reference list: "Last name, first name (and middle initial if given)."

    • 3

Include the date in parentheses followed by the title of the presentation in italics.

    • 4

End your citation noting the type of presentation and where it was presented. Presentation types will vary from sessions at conferences to PowerPoint or classrooms and public meetings.

    • 5

Follow the example below inserting the information appropriate for the presentation you wish to cite.
