How to Cite an Online Article in APA Format

American Psychological Association (APA) format is most commonly used to cite sources in work done in the social sciences. In order to maintain the consistency and flow of a paper, it is required to use APA style guidelines when citing sources both in text and in your reference list or bibliography. Citing an online article in APA format is similar to citing an offline article.

Instructions

  1. Reference List

    • 1

Follow the format shown below for citing an article, such as a journal article, obtained online.

Thompson, A. A., & Johnson, B. B. (2008). How to cite an online article in APA style. The Online Times (in italics), 5(3).

Note: Use a volume and issue number when available.

    • 2

Follow APA guidelines based on the number of authors of an article. Type the last name of the author first followed by initials for the first and middle name.

For articles with two authors, use last names followed by initials in both cases, separating the two names using an ampersand instead of the word "and."

For three to seven authors, maintain the last name followed by initials format, separating each author with a comma, but use an ampersand before the last author's name.

For articles with eight or more authors, include the first six authors (last name, initials) followed by an ellipsis (...) and the last author's name. Place a period after the last author's name.

    • 3

Place the URL of the online article at the end of the citation, as illustrated:

Thompson, A. A., & Johnson, B. B. (2008). How to cite an online article in APA style. The Online Times (in italics), 5(3). Retrieved from http://www.theonlinetimes.com/54321/onlineartapa/

Be sure to include the full link so that your reader can readily access the article you cited.

    In Text

    • 4

Include the last name of each author, separated by an ampersand and followed by the year in parentheses, for articles with two authors.

      (Thompson & Johnson, 2008).

You can also cite two authors in-text as follows:

Thompson and Johnson (2008) found that most writers...

    • 5

For articles with three to five authors, list all of the authors' names either in parentheses or as part of the text the first time you cite them. Subsequently, use only the first author's name followed by "et al."

      (Thompson et al., 2008)

    • 6

For articles with six or more authors, use only the first author's name followed by parentheses each time you cite the article, including the first time.
