How to Format a Band Name in APA

The American Psychological Association's (APA's) writing style for format, voice and citations is most commonly used in the social sciences, but its applications are far more reaching than that. For example, you may wish to use APA style to properly title yourself or your organization. Additionally, you may occasionally need to cite a band name in your writing.

Instructions

  1. Titling a Band to Match APA Style

    • 1

Capitalize the first letter of the name.

    • 2

Capitalize only proper nouns and the first letter after a colon, after the first letter of the title.

    • 3

Use concise and direct language, if your band's name is expository.

Citing a Band Name as a Song Composer

    • 4

Locate the band name, copyright year, album name, place of publication, and record label for the song you wish to cite. This should all be available on the media source, such as the CD cover.

    • 5

Format the information as follows: Band Name. (Year). Song title. On Album Name [Media format]. Place of Publication: Record Label.

    • 6

Verify that your citation looks like this: Amparanoia. (2005). Don't Leave Me Now. On Putumayo Presents Latin Lounge. New York, NY: Putumayo World Music.
