Put your list in alphabetical order based on the last name of the first author or the first acceptable entry for that reference. There are several cases in which a single author might not be identified, such as in works completed by organizations or titles released by publishing houses. APA Style does not require you to further sort your list by type of reference, but sometimes instructors prefer this. Check with your professor to be sure it is not expected.
Format the entries correctly. Place the reference list on its own page at the end of your document. Label it with the word "References," which should be centered at the top of the page. Double-space the entries with a hanging indent, meaning the first line is flush with the left margin and each subsequent line of the entry is indented by one tab space.
Organize the entry information for each reference used. Start with the author's last name followed by a comma and then the first initial of her first name. List all of the authors this way, If there is more than one author, separating each name with a comma. Eliminate the comma and separate the last author from the list with an ampersand for up to seven authors. Use an ellipses to eliminate the eighth author through the second to last, finishing the list with the last author's name.
Follow the author's name with the date the work was published, the name of the work, the name of the book or journal it was published in (written in italicized form), the edition or volume of the major work, the place of publication and the publisher's name.
