Instructions

  1. Citing a Journal Article in APA Style

    • 1

Quote material from a journal article within the text of your paper. Use the author's name in your lead-in sentence. At the end of the quote, put the year the article was published in parentheses. Example: As A. Author states, "This is the quote." (2010)

    • 2

Paraphrase material from a journal article without mentioning the author's name in the text itself. Put the author's name and the year it was published in parentheses following the paraphrased material, with a comma following the name. Example: This is the gist of it in my own words. (A. Author, 2010)

In the instance of an unsigned journal article, if you refer to the article title in your contextual lead-in, there's no need for a parenthetical citation. If you paraphrase the source without context, use keywords from the title in quotation marks. Example: This paraphrased material ("A Note," 2010).

    • 3

Order the author names the same way as the byline does, should the article have two authors. For example: (A. Author and A. Partner, 2010)

    • 4

Write the Latin words "et al" after the first author's name if the journal article has three or more co-authors, with a comma after et al. Example: (A. Author et al, 2010)

    • 5

Insert an entry in your reference list for the author and article. The reference list is alphabetized by the first letter of the author's last name. Example: Author, A.

    • 6

Complete the bibliographic information in the following order: Last name, first initial (co-author would follow, separated by a comma and "and"). The year of publication in parentheses. The title of the article, the name of the journal (in italics). Volume number (issue number, if application), page number range. Example: Author, A., and Author, B. (2010). The article, Journal Name. 99(2), 3-10.

    • 7

In the instance of an unsigned journal article, alphabetize it in your reference list by the first letter of the title, excluding "the." Follow the title with the year in parentheses, and then return to the standard format for the rest of the publication details. Example: A Note About Survey Data. (2010) Journal Name. 99(2), 3-10
